So yesterday was the Super Bowl in America, meaning a bunch of guys played American Football in a stadium, but more importantly, Beyoncé was the Half-Time Show performer!
Beyoncé delivered 12 minutes of pure sass! First her stage ignites from the darkness, with fiery faces appearing on the field. Then boom, a flaming outline of Beyonce appears! We see her silhouette before she strutts down the stage singing Crazy In Love. Beyoncé sang a great mash-up of songs, old and new, sure to please every Beyoncé fan. That brilliant interactive screen she used to perfection in her 2012 performance at the Billboard Awards made an appearance again, really complimenting the amazing choreography in this show. Then Kelly and Michelle literally jump up out of the stage, landing and staring down the camera, before the trio performed some old school Destiny’s Child songs. I wish they had performed Survivor as well, but instead we were treated to a performance of Single Ladies before Kelly and Michelle vanished, and Beyoncé continued to wow us before ending on a dramatic performance of Halo.
I was so excited throughout the whole performance. I had it fullscreen, with surround sound and it felt like I was there! Beyoncé is an amazing performer. I enjoyed Madonna’s performance last year, and knew Beyoncé could bring a better show, and boy did she! Madonna brought vast staging, big set pieces and Nicki Minaj, but Beyoncé made that look dull with her interactive stage, amazing dancers and a nostalgia shot from Destiny’s Child.
As someone who’s worked in costume for film and television, what Beyoncé was wearing was of key interest to me. That amazing leather outfit with the tear-away skirt and collar, was brilliant! I loved the intricacy of the leather detailing, and it was just so strong and sassy. That silhouette was brilliant! It took over 200 hours and 14 fittings before that masterpiece was finished. I found this great throwback image of Tina Turner wearing a similar outfit in the 70’s.
The show was brilliant, it was an experience. I don’t know how 2014’s Half Time Show will be able to measure up to this. I would certainly be scared trying to fill those sassy boots Beyoncé stamped on that field.
