As I write this I’m hearing the bouncy tunes of Kelis and witnessing the abundance of people that travel out of the Auckland airport. I’ve travelled through this airport many times, going to places such as Melbourne, London and Los Angeles. Today I am heading to Los Angeles again, but this time I’m going solo! Last year I went solo travelling to Europe, visiting England, Wales, Sweden & France, so travelling solo isn’t such a scary thought now. But this will be my first time going to America by myself.
My family and I have visited Los Angeles a few times to visit the Disney theme parks, since we are massive Disney fans. But it is not Disney that is drawing me to L.A. this time (However, I will be spending 5 days at the Disney parks whilst I’m in L.A.) It is Vidcon, the biggest annual YouTube convention in the world that is the reason for this trip.
I began my YouTube journey in 2008 as a 14 year old seeking friends and something fun to do. Towards the end of 2013 I started to take YouTube more seriously and have since begun producing weekly videos every Friday. I’ve also had the privilege of collaborating with some great YouTubers in Australia, which was such a brilliant experience. My audience has grown by 5,000 since the beginning of the year, and continues to grow rapidly. So it’s only natural that the next step would be to attend Vidcon, a place to network with fellow creators from all over the world, and learn from the pros in panels & Q&A sessions.
Over 18,000 people will be attending Vidcon – fans, creators, advertisers and more! This will be the biggest event I’ve ever attended, and I hope it will be life changing. That may sound a bit dramatic, but YouTube is my passion and Vidcon holds so much potential for life changing events to occur.
I’ve been reading tweets all day from my Australian, American, Canadian and British friends, all stating how excited they are about Vidcon, and all sharing what point they’re at in their journey to Vidcon. In just a few hours I’ll be boarding a plane to LA, and then my journey to Vidcon will really be underway!
